617Live: Somehow TMZ got they’re hands on & released the LAPD investigation evidence picture of a battered Rhianna. Now you know we had to give ya the scoop…Thanks TMZ!

The unauthorized release of a domestic violence photograph immediately generated an internal investigation.

At about 7 p.m. on February 19, 2009, the Los Angeles Police Department Media Relations Section began receiving numerous inquiries about the release of a photograph associated with a domestic violence incident that occurred on February 8, 2009, involving entertainer Chris Brown. The photograph appeared on an entertainment website. The photograph has the appearance of one taken during an official Domestic Violence investigation. The Los Angeles Police Department takes seriously its duty to maintain the confidentiality of victims of domestic violence. The Department launched an immediate internal investigation and subsequently filed a personnel complaint. A violation of this type is considered serious misconduct, with penalties up to and including termination.

617Live: Ok, with that said don’t you think the “leak” came from within the LAPD? Damn, is nothing private anymore?

I work with teenagers and have had to defend Rihanna not as a celebrity but as a victim of violence. “She hit him first”, “She gave him herpes” etc. No one has the right to batter anyone no matter what the circumstances. I have heard a lot of rumors about her transmitting a disease to him. However, as a sexual health educator, I believe that it is both partners responsibility to protect themselves by using male or female condoms. A lot of STDs go undetected because they don’t always have symptoms.

However, nothing about this spread of herpes was in the court tapes. A lot of people have called her “stupid” for staying but it is not easy for a victim to leave a batterer. She is often brain-washed into thinking that “he/she loves me”. “She”-women are batterers too. And most importantly, the victim is convinced that he/she will be hurt or killed if they try to leave.

So before we rush to judgement, let’s hear both sides of the story and let the court decide. However, if Chris Brown is found guilty of battering his partner, he should indeed go to jail regardless of his celebrity status.

If you are a victim of violence contact the Safe Link in Boston to get support. If you are a batterer, contact the Emerge program in Boston to get help.

Peace on Earth. Good Will Towards Men and Women…
