Everybody follows the leader and execute the plan synchronistically in the wolf pack. The wolf is even connected to many ancient stories dating even back to ancient Khemet (Egypt), where we all know Hermes (Tehuti/Anubis), the Lord of Underworld, is one of the 1st ancient deities of the spiritual world.

Kyle Brooks stands on his head and spins like a blond blur to the thud of music. Eddie Mandell, Jordan Follins, Keenan Shelton, and Crystal Starkey all watch and then give their own short demonstrations of freestyle hip-hop moves.

The group, whose ages range from 11 to 16, has returned from the 2010 USA and World Hip Hop Dance Championships held last month in Las Vegas. Each of them was on one of two crews that won gold — a junior team named Lil Phunk Boyz and a varsity crew named Phunk Allstars. Of the nine medals awarded in their categories, the teams took four overall.

The dancers learned and perfected their art in a small studio with the big name Phunk Phenomenon Dance Complex, located at the back of a Harley-Davidson dealership in Everett. It is there that Reia Briggs-Connor, 35, chief choreographer, molds young hip-hop gods and goddesses.

The studio starts with junior crews, ages 7-13, then varsity, 14-18, and finally adult, 18-30. The performers come in all sizes and colors, and Briggs-Connor is the leader who drives them to do better. What she lives for is achievement. She also happens to own the place.

Briggs-Connor looks great after having her son Aaron a mere 10 months ago. But then you expect that from a woman who has danced all her life and was a New England Patriots cheerleader for three years. She also created Lil Phunk, the official junior dance team for the Boston Celtics. The troupe puts 34 youngsters on the parquet floor at 12 home games.

For the past four summers, her hip-hop dancers have endured a six-hour-a-day, six-week program in the studio to learn the choreography for championship competition. No lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer for them. They also take lessons at Phunk Phenomenon during the school year — gymnastics, hip-hop, break dancing. Keenan has spent so much time at the studio this summer he calls it his house.

But this regimen pales next to the rigors of training in Las Vegas, where they put down a dance floor in empty meeting rooms and practice, sometimes until 2:30 a.m. “I’d sleep, eat, and wait for the next practice,’’ recalls Eddie, 11.

To compete there is not cheap. Each crew member — there are eight on a team — must raise a steep $1,200 to cover plane fare and hotel, plus more for meals and incidentals. The teams hold car washes and performances to raise money, and parents kick in as much as they can. In addition, around 100 family members and friends flew out on their own dime this year to watch the competition.

All the dancers came to Phunk Phenomenon to learn. Some, like Jordan, 11, came with the dancing gene. My parents used to dance,’’ he says. “My dad was a break dancer and my mom was a classical dancer.’’

Keenan, meanwhile, has been dancing for as long as he can remember. “I’ve always danced. I’d see stuff on TV,’’ he says. “My mother took me here because I had too much energy and needed to release it.’’

Briggs-Connor got started early herself. She started dancing at home in Chelsea when she was 3. “My mom always noticed me dancing; I’d be watching ‘Grease’ on TV,’’ she recalls. “So she put me in classes. I learned tap dancing first, then tap and jazz styles, a bit of swing dancing, the jitterbug. I was drawn to Michael Jackson. I liked hip-hop music.’’

By 16, she was an assistant dance teacher at Chelsea High School while a student there. She went to Wheelock College to pursue a degree in preschool teaching, and she became a Patriots cheerleader. That was a turning point for her.

“They taught me everything as a professional dancer I know,’’ she says. “The training, the work ethic. To be part of that franchise was an amazing experience. I was never as focused.’’

More than seven years ago, Briggs-Connor took a chance and rented a studio of her own in Everett. She was terrified, but attracted enough students to cover the rent. Five years ago, she moved to her current site, which is larger, and her students now number over 350. “It pays for itself,’’ she says about the operation. She takes no money to work with her competitive teams.

“We’ve come full circle,’’ she says, referring to women her age who grew up dancing. “We danced as kids and now we own studios and we’re teaching it.’’

Her husband, Rick Connor, has never danced a day in his life, she reports. Connor, an Everett police officer, drives the youngsters to shows and acts as their booking agent.

When it comes to personality types, Briggs-Connor is somewhere beyond “A.’’ Asked what she does to relax, she says she goes to the gym. There’s a lot of love but little peace at home with two boys, the baby, Aaron, and Jared, 5. “There’s no relaxation with kids that young,’’ she says.

Plus, she and her husband also give special care to Jared, who suffers from the extremely rare Sanfilippo syndrome, a lethal disease without a cure that progressively destroys a child’s central nervous system. Briggs-Connor says Jared can’t talk and will eventually lose the ability to eat. Life expectancy is usually 10 to 20 years. When he was 2, she was told there were just nine other children in Massachusetts who had the disease.

Both parents, it turns out, carried the gene that produces the syndrome. Neither had any idea, and Aaron is free of it. Her hip-hop students wear black T-shirts with the words “Hip Hop For Hope’’ written on them in purple in honor of Jared. They participate in charity events to raise money and awareness about his condition.

Briggs-Connor does not separate her personal and professional lives. “It’s all in one,’’ she says. “Work is therapy for me. There’s no light yet at the end of the tunnel, but if I sat home and thought about Jared, I’d be more depressed. We bring him home and love him every day.’’

It’s air time on a recent weekday, and the DJs don headphones and take to the mikes around the control board. “Hey, listeners, this is DJ Baby Soul from your favorite radio show on the planet! Stay tuned in. Today our focus will be on peace for our community.’’

For the next 2 1/2 hours, teenage girls from the inner-city hold forth on matters as small as ankle boots and as serious as domestic violence on GRLZradio.org, where the program is streamed live every weekday. Lately, they’ve been working on a “Peace Blowout’’ for today at Little House, 275 East Cottage St., in Dorchester, that will feature food, a fashion show, poetry slam, and performances. It’s been a long, hot summer in the city.

“A lot of kids don’t have much to do, and there’s a lot of violence in the summertime,’’ says Shayla Biggs-Ruff, 18, who has been with the radio show for four years and is heading soon to Newbury College. The girls at the radio controls nod; they don’t feel safe in their neighborhoods, either, they say. Francisca Theodule’s brother was shot in the leg as he rode his bicycle in Dorchester. Lenise Farrier’s family is moving because there have been shootings on their street. Teiyarh Cinelli’s friend was grazed by a bullet. Two other girls who have worked at GRLZ had brothers killed in street violence.

The place they feel safest, many of the girls say, is where they happen to be sitting at the moment: GRLZ, located at St. Mary’s Women and Children’s Center in Dorchester. The center started the station in 2003 to provide training and jobs to girls from Boston’s poorest, most crime-ridden neighborhoods. Each year, 100 girls learn radio technology and communications skills by literally running the show.

Most important, they learn about issues relevant to their lives. Whether they’re researching topics for the show, doing outreach for younger kids in the community, or having professional women speak with them, the girls at GRLZ are exposed to life far from the streets.

“These are girls living in a very high-risk community, living on the edge, and yet finding themselves in very amazing ways,’’ says Judy Beckler, St. Mary’s president. “These are kids who don’t imagine they can go to college, but they’re creating energy about that possibility in their lives instead of the violence they face everyday, and they start to move in a positive direction.’’ This year, all of the graduating seniors are going off to college.

Bernadette Reid is the program director and she has seen the girls blossom. Besides the technical skills, they also learn about conflict resolution, community service — and self respect, she says. “There is violence in every one of their communities, and we give them a place where they feel they matter, where their voice is heard.’’

While one group of girls is putting out a recent show, another group is in an adjacent room, teaching visiting Girl Scouts from the Orchard Gardens School in Roxbury about radio broadcasting. Their laughter drifts into the studio, as the younger girls attempt to write their own radio liners and public service announcements. GRLZ emphasizes peer leadership, where the veterans teach the newcomers. As part of their community outreach, the girls have also held workshops on body image, media messages, dating violence, and conflict resolution. A large poster hanging on the wall says: “You’re Strong, Smart, and Bold.’’

“Some girls come in and they’re completely shy; they’re not used to having a legitimate outlet for their concerns,’’ says Tracy Kelley, outreach coordinator. “We give them a place where they can come to feel safe and have a voice.’’

Shameyka McCalman, 17, joined GRLZ last November. She says she’s learned a lot about radio, and about herself. “I’m more confident and vocal,’’ she says.

Back on the air, the teens are talking about domestic violence. Shameyka gives the grim statistics and then DJ Baby Soul, also known as Daneva McWilliams, discusses emotional abuse. “The victims lose all self-confidence and the things their partner says start eating away at them, making them feel worthless,’’ says Daneva, 16 and a junior at the Jeremiah Burke High School. The DJs give out the number for a dating violence hot line and tell listeners that no one deserves to be abused. Recently, they devoted an entire show to healthy relationships.

Each show is scripted by the girls, who occasionally stray from it. During one on-air discussion on gangs, Daneva reads: “Most of the kids that are in gangs today do it because they have no one to look out for them. No positive role model. So they’re taken under the wings of gang bangers and they consider themselves a family.’’

Francisca breaks in: “You don’t see suburban kids out there killing each other. They have manners.’’

Daneva: “We’re making ourselves look like animals and we’re not.’’

Shameyka takes issue, mentioning the Columbine High School shootings. “You can’t just say it’s in our neighborhoods. It can happen anywhere.’’

The girls sum it up by telling listeners to become positive, not negative, influences in their community. “How are you repping your neighborhood by killing everybody?’’ asks Daneva.

The girls consider themselves family, and there’s an easy banter among them, a palpable respect. “It’s a good atmosphere,’’ says Shameyka. “All the girls are close, no one’s catty. We all end up bonding.’’

At 22, Shalaya West is a recent graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. She now works as a youth supervisor at GRLZ, which she joined as a teenager in 2005. “I never really left GRLZ radio,’’ she says. “I always thought about it. It teaches you who you are and where you want to go. Here, they push us to do better.’’

On the air, April Smith, or DJ Love as she calls herself, is reading a poem called, “We Want Peace.’’ When she finishes, she tells listeners that she wrote it after her cousin Rayshawn was killed last year in gang violence. “Thank you for listening,’’ she says as the show heads into a break. “Keep it locked here on GRLZradio.org, where girls are heard and respected.’’

For some teens, back-to-school shopping is a weekend trip to the local mall. For others, it’s a summer long process tailored by careful imitation of celebrity trends.

“The first day of school is like a movie premiere,’’ said Mia Lin, a 16-year-old junior. “That first day is definitely a time for scoping out the fashion front-runners. Every year is an opportunity to redefine your style.’’

Lin, who describes her own style as “urban,’’ said it’s the shoes that make the outfit for her. “I have about 90 pairs,’’ she said. “I wear whole outfits just to accent my shoes. My favorites are my green, black, red, and gold Supra Chad Muska Skytops, because they’re incredibly comfortable and they give me a swagger boost.’’

For 16-year-old Jon Paul Roby, also a junior, it’s all about cardigans from shops like Urban Outfitters and American Apparel. “I describe my personal style as geek chic,’’ he said from behind Buddy Holly-esque prescription black-frame glasses. “I have about 12 cardigans that I wear over V-neck T-shirts and skinny jeans, usually with boat shoes or canvas sneakers.’’

Lin and Roby — like most of their peers — are using the final weeks of summer to rifle through clothing racks in search of clothes that best express their personalities and that do not embody what Roby calls the “cookie-cutter teenager.’’ The object of the high-school fashion game is to accomplish the nearly impossible task of standing out and fitting in at the same time.

With mall retailers like American Eagle Outfitters, Hollister Co., Old Navy, and Abercrombie & Fitch still reigning supreme in most high school hallways, skinny jeans, comfy T’s, and UGG boots are the go-to outfit for girls, while sports jerseys, loose-fitting jeans or cargo shorts, and sneakers are the unofficial uniform for boys.

Jill Simon, a buyer for the Newton-based National Jean Company, said those basic clothing staples are still a must this year, but students wanting to make that movie-premiere entrance can take their style to the next level with a few simple tips.

“Skinny jeans tucked into boots are still one of the most popular styles for girls, but we are also selling a lot of jeggings this year,’’ said Simon, referring to the flexible, spandex-blend leggings fashioned to look like denim. “Jeans for guys are becoming a bit straighter in the leg. They’re still pretty relaxed through the thigh, just narrower in the leg. It gives guys a more tailored, more put-together look.

“But, hands down, the hottest pant this year is the J Brand ‘Houlihan,’ ’’ she added. “It’s a slim cargo-style pant, which looks great because military style is definitely in fashion this fall. We’re also selling a lot of twill, which works out great for private school kids who can’t wear jeans,’’ said Simon, while noting that above all, comfort and confidence is key at school.

“Appearance for me at school is super important, because if you dress like you don’t care, then you don’t care,’’ said Lin. “Kids who look nice for school actually want to be there.’’

And as this year’s junior class president, Lin already has her first-day-of-school outfit planned. “I’ll wear my vintage riding boots from the Tannery in Cambridge, and pair those with some high-waisted skinny jeans and a button-down top.’’

Also as a junior class president at his school, Roby has his eye on a casual but put-together look. “I’ll probably wear shorts from Urban Outfitters with a white V-neck shirt tucked in, with flip-flops and, of course, my glasses. I like to make an outfit look effortless, even if I’ve spent a lot of time picking it out,’’ he said. “I care about what I look like at school. When I feel like I look better, I raise my hand more in class and just have more confidence in myself.’’

High school hallways have long been a venue for style-conscious teens to push the fashion envelope and irk school administrators — most recently, with female students arriving for class wearing thin, clingy leggings instead of a more traditional covering, and male students with jeans worn low (very low) or sweat pants.

“We try to reach an agreement where we acknowledge kids’ rights to express themselves, but also acknowledge that we have an obligation to provide an appropriate learning environment for other kids,’’ said Framingham High School principal Michael Welch. “We try to avoid things that take away from the educational process.’’

Operation Hoodsie Cup is a new, innovative community policing program from the Boston Police Department that seeks to build trust between law enforcement and Boston youth by passing out free ice cream during the hot summer months. Starting July 22 and running through September 6, a custom Boston Police ice-cream truck will visit pre-determined Boston neighborhoods at various times as uniformed police officers hand out free Hoodsie Cups.

The police department strives every day to strengthen ties and build community trust with the residents whom it serves. The department recognizes the significance of cultivating police relations with local teens and fostering a good rapport so youth and police can work together to improve safety and reduce crime in all Boston neighborhoods. This latest initiative is just one of the many examples of how the BPD is connecting with local members of the community and demonstrating its commitment to community policing.

Hill Holliday developed the concept and design for Operation Hoodsie Cup while Hood provided an ice-cream truck and donated the ice-cream cups that will be distributed.

Students just shy of the proper credits to graduate have a second opportunity with a special online summer program.

Two hundred happy students finished high school & others just shy have an opportunity with a special online summer program for students a few classes shy of graduating.

Yaneliz Ortiz, 18, of Roxbury enrolled in the credit recovery program to earn an English credit. She said she plans to attend Roxbury Community College in the fall and hopes to eventually transfer to the University of Massachusetts at Boston to earn a degree in physical therapy.

“I’m proud of myself for accomplishing my goals,” Ortiz said at the White Stadium in Jamaica Plain, where Mayor Thomas M. Menino and school officials were on hand to deliver diplomas.

Through the credit recovery program, students who fall one or two classes short of graduating can satisfy the requirements over the summer through online classes.

Dr. Sito Narcisse, the headmaster at English High School, said the summer courses were as rigorous as the regular term-time classes.

“We have so many people dropping out these days,” Narcisse said. “This is pretty much a second chance.”
